Miyagi
Located
on the Pacific coast in the
northern part of the main island
of Honshu, Miyagi Prefecture is
primarily an agricultural and
forestry community and major
supplier of rice and beef. The
capital, Sendai, is the stadium
venue for World Cup games and is
also the home of Sendai Vegalta FC
of the J League's second division.
The
city is a relatively modern one by
Japanese standards, being only 400
years old, so there are few old,
traditional buildings, although at
the Tomizawa Site museum are some
well-preserved ancient remains of
the original inhabitants of the
area.The main shopping and
entertainment area is around
Ichibancho Avenue, where there is
a reasonable selection of shops,
bars, cafes, restaurants and clubs
and the Nagamachi district, close
to Sendai station, has more shops,
including the major Japanese
department stores. For recreation,
there are several hot spring
resorts around Sendai and the area
is also popular for hiking.
Sendai is 1 hour 45 mins from
Tokyo by bullet train, and Sendai
international Airport has links to
Seoul and Pusan in Korea. Local
transport is available on the
subway and bus network. The
climate is relatively mild, with
June temperatures around 20C.
