Gwangju
(Kwangju)
Gwangju
is in north-central Jeollanam-do.
It borders on
Damyang-gun on the
east, Changsong- and Hampyeong-guns
on the west,
Naju-si and Hwasun-gun
on the south and Changsong-gun on
the north. It
covers a total of 465§´,
and as of 1986 its population
stood at more than one
million. There are 99
dongs under five gus. (Dongs and
guns are basic
administrative units.)
Local
specialties: Mountain-grown
watermelons and Chunseolcha
(Native tea)
from Mudeungsan
Mountain are very popular. In
addition, Buk (Traditional drum)
and Onggi (Large brown
storage jars) produced in Gwangju
command a good
reputation
