THE PLAY-OFFS
The nine group runners-up will be drawn from a pot. Eight teams will be paired for a two-leg, home-and-away play-off with the winners qualifying for the 2002 World Cup finals.

The ninth team will play the winner of the AFC Third Round play-off. The winner of this UEFA/AFC play-off will earn a berth to the 2002 finals.
